FOR OFF-AIR TV VIEWERS
All new TVs are required to pick up digital signals in addition to analog signals. But if your TV is more than a few years old, it's probably not capable of picking up digital signals off the air. That means you'll have to buy a digital converter box for it to keep working after the February 2009 transition.
How do I know if my TV falls into this category?
- I have a small antenna on my TV (often called 'rabbit ears') and/or I have a large TV antenna on my roof
- I do not have a cable or satellite feed coming into the back of the TV
- My TV is more than a few years old
If this describes your TV setup, make sure that you have a digital converter box for each TV before February 17, 2009.
You can find digital converter boxes at most consumer electronics stores; they usually cost between $50 and $60. But the government is offering $40-off coupons to make them more affordable.
Those coupons must be ordered from the government, and you can only get up to two. Click here to fill out your order online or click here to download a form you can print out and mail.
You can also call 1-888-DTV-2009 to order.
NOTE: Some low-power TV stations will continue to broadcast the old-fashioned way after the transition, but all major stations -- including FOX 13 -- will go digital-only on February 17, 2009.
